The Council met at 9.30 a.m.,

on Thursday, the 26th July, to consider the following appeal from the decision of the General Military Service Tribunal:-

three men in your firm should not be exempted. You have appealed against that decision and you have sent us a memorandum which we have considered. Take the case of Mr. Johnstone first. He is in the China Navigation Shipping office.

Mr Ross TROMBON Baid that since the appeal papers had been sent in further information had reached them, which he would like to take the opportunity of submitting. The first statements sent to the Tribunal were made as short and as concise as possible and they then shortly stated the facts in the form they though would be most suitable, but it now appeared that they were wrong in that And that it would have been a great deal better if more detailed information had been supplied. They had given that de- tail in the statement which had now been sent in, but be wished to add a few further facts. The firm's business here was confined to a small number of lines. They were not general merchants and did not buy or sell any goods, for the busi nesa was confined to insurance and ship- ping in all its forms; building ships, re- pair There was also the sugar refinery pairing them, managing and bandling business.
